Playing away against Leeds Adel 4s today, Batley knew this was going to be a close match. They weren’t wrong, Adel were fast and strong, they knew where each other were on the pitch and played the ball around skilfully.
Batley weren’t outplayed though, closing down the Adel attacks and making breaks forward of their own. It was end to end stuff with both teams getting chances to take the lead. Keeper, Helen was facing her first real challenges this season, including saving a deflection from one of her own team.
At halftime all was level at 0-0. This could go either way.
Adel were out quickly on the attack in the second half and caught Batley on the back foot gaining a couple of quick penalty corners. Mel and the defence kept them at bay closing down the strikes and continuing to make some great saves. Adel were attacking high up the pitch, pushing Batley to defend really deep and meaning they struggled to make attacks. Still they continued to fight and had some good fast breaks and dangerous runs in the Adel circle.
In the end though it was a strong strike from the top of the circle saved by Helen but lifted in on the rebound that put Batley 1-0 down with 10 minutes to go.
Batley didn’t stop pushing to get the goal back attacking hard in the last few minutes, but it wasn’t to be.
The game ended 1-0 to Adel. Player of the match went to Helen for some awesome saves.
Next week Batley play Cleckheaton at home.
