Cast your minds back, if you can, to the weekend before last the weather was sunny and Batley had two games in two days! A frozen pitch at Ben Rhydding earlier in the season meant we had a catch up game on the Sunday.

Our first game was against Bradford University. We all met on the sideline before the game, a strong team of 13. Bradford had 9, so we were pretty hopeful that we could come away from this game with 3 points.

As the game started, it became clear that Bradford had other ideas. They may only have had 9, but they were fast and strong and were getting away from us on the pitch. it took us a while to get the marking right. While we were still sorting this out, Bradford had some great attacks on goal, eventually getting round the defence and scoring. We were 1-0 down.

We were making attacks of our own and soon after, Ashleigh was in the perfect position for a 1 on 1 with the keeper. She kept her head and scored the first GOAL for Batley, 1-1.

Eventually we got it together and started to make some strong attacks of our own. We had the advantage of some extra players, so shouldn’t have been leaving any gaps. Bradford were still getting through more often than we’d have liked, but we started to close down the press and stop the ball getting through.

We had some great attacks and some chances, but it wasn’t until Fretters made a great run down the pitch and cross to Jodi, who took a straight strike on goal that we scored the second GOAL for Batley, 2-1!

The game ended 2-1 to Batley. Had Bradford Uni had a full team, we wouldn’t have been so lucky with this game. We definitely didn’t play the best we could. MOM was shared between Newby, Fretters and Jenni P.

Our second match of the weekend was against Ben Rhydding. We had just beaten these guys the week before, it was a tough game, we knew it could go either way. Some of us were quite tired from the day before, but we knew they would have played too.

Right from the start it was clear that we were going to be better today, we were using the space and had lots of the play. We marked well, Ben Rhydding had some strong players, but we made the effort to mark them out of the play, so we could keep the attacks to a minimum.

We had some great attacks and were doing a good job of stopping the ball getting through. Ben Rhydding we’re really fast on the counter attack, and it was one of these attacks that left us behind. A great play by Ben Rhydding took the ball round our defence and into our net. 1-0 to Ben Rhydding.

It was still 1-0 at half time. We knew we had a good chance in this match. we weren’t being out played, it was pretty even.

Half time saw the beginnings of tiredness coming through, but we kept our game going, continued to make space. We won short corners and made good attacks, but the goal never came.

The game ended 1-0 to Ben Rhydding, we played so much better in this match though. MOM was shared between Gail and Fretters.

Last week, we were due to play Bradford at home, unfortunately the snow had other ideas. The match was cancelled due to a frozen pitch. Which was luck for me because I was already massively behind on my match reports!
