At the end of April, Batley Ladies reconvened to start out Summer League season. Weeknight games meant some players were unable to play because of other commitments. Most notably, we found ourselves without Helen playing in goal. We’ve had mixed results previously in the summer league. We like to use it to work on our team play and just enjoy the games. There’s no pressure on us to win.

Only needing 7 players made it easier for Vicky and Jodi to confirm a full team each week. We even managed subs most weeks. This worked out well for Vicky, because she suffered a severe lack of commitment over the 7 game season.
The first week we won, 7-0, with no keeper! (We were supposed to have a keeper, but Jodi forgot to pick up the kit, so Ashley ended up playing outfield with the rest of us). The following week, we won again, and the next week, and the next.
No one dared to talk about it, but we were doing really well! Jodi was racking up the goals and each game was a goal fest. We kept up with the goal tally here, 42 goals in 7 games.
We were all waiting for the game where our luck would run out, and a team would take advantage of our lack of a keeper, but even though lots of teams tried, we managed to keep on top of the defending and took advantage of having an extra outfield player for most games. The games that Ashley played in net for us we were able to relax a little in defence and play further up field.
By the second to last game in the season, we dared to talk about the fact that we were top of the league and if we carried on this way we would definitely win the league.
We got to our last game knowing that as long we didn’t lose, the league was ours. It was the most nervous most of us had felt. We didn’t need to though, we had a great time. The final score was 5-1 and Batley Ladies had won the league!

A great result for us, and some great games to be involved in. Now we have the long wait through the summer for the winter season to start. Time to enjoy the weeks off and do all the things that you wont have time for when the season starts (like sleeping in on Saturdays!)
