This Week...Bridlington

This week, Batley were due to play Driffield away. This is always a difficult sell. Over an hour’s journey to a match means it’s going to take up most of the day. In the last two seasons we have managed to scrape together 10 players to go up and play. These usually end up being my favourite matches, because we don’t lose. We usually draw and it feels like triumph in the face of adversity knowing that we had considered throwing in the towel and giving Driffield 3 points when we’ve managed to come away with 1 point ourselves.

This year Driffield had a different pitch, in Bridlington! So we would be going to the seaside! Although, by Tuesday before we played, it became clear that we probably wouldn’t be going to the seaside, because we only had 5 people who could make it. There’s been a few injuries in the team over the last couple of weeks, and these combined with the big drive meant we were nowhere near a full team (even if we all had 2 sticks!).

So we conceded. I always really struggle with this, it feels like we’ve handed Driffield 3 points (you’re welcome guys) and put ourselves willingly in to the bottom half of the league. Despite Vicky’s best efforts to pull a team together. Good work Vicky, I totally understand why you cancelled. Being captain is really hard in this situation. Also, I apologise for being grumpy with people, I know it can’t be helped.

Anyway, because I’d planned to be in Bridlington this Saturday, and the weather was supposed to be ok, I went anyway! I even took the hockey balls (accidentally)! So rather than a match report, I’m sharing my Bridlington pictures it wasn’t quite the calorie burning visit I’d been planning to have, but it was good all the same. Enjoy!

The benefit of not playing this week is that we’ll now have two weeks off to rest our injuries and hopefully everyone will be firing on all cylinders when we get back in November.
